Dear Subscriber,

The April 20 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon caused one of the largest off-shore oil spills in U.S. history, threatening the entire Gulf and Atlantic coastline. The effects of this much oil on a community so dependent on the Gulf waters will be far-reaching and pronounced, leading many to describe the situation in the Gulf of Mexico as an oil disaster rather than an oil spill.

Today the Institute of Medicine released
Assessing the Effects of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill on Human Health, the summary of a June workshop to explore the spill's potential short- and long-term health effects on affected communities and individuals.
